Fall Fly Fishing on North Georgia Private Water

Fall is when North Georgia fly fishing peaks. Water cools into the 50s, brown trout move into shallow water to spawn, and the trophy fish that have been hiding all summer come out to feed. Guided trips on private water through October and November are the highest-percentage fishing of the year. October weekends fill 4-6 weeks out — book your fall trip now.

Why fall is the best fly fishing season in North Georgia

Three things hit at once. First, water temperatures drop from summer 70°F+ into the 50-60°F range — the sweet spot for trout activity. Second, brown trout move into shallow water to spawn, putting trophy fish in casting range. Third, fall hatches (blue-winged olives, October caddis, midges) are reliable, predictable, and bring fish to the surface. October-November consistently produces our biggest fish of the year.

What private water gives you in fall

Public water gets hammered in fall — the season is well-known and the rivers are crowded. On our private water on the Soque, Etowah vineyard, and Noontootla, you fish secluded sections without other anglers in your run. The brown trout on the Soque this time of year are routinely 18-22 inches; we've netted 24-inch+ wild fish on October full-day trips.

Booking + logistics

October weekends sell out 4-6 weeks ahead. Weekday trips have more flexibility but still book up by mid-September. We run half-day and full-day trips through Thanksgiving; trip pricing is the same in fall as the rest of the year ($400-$875 depending on configuration). Bring layered clothing — fall mornings are cold (40-50°F at the river) and afternoons can hit 70°F.

Common questions

Fall Fly Fishing on North Georgia Private Water — FAQ

When does fall fly fishing season start in North Georgia?

Fishing turns on around mid-September when water temperatures drop below 65°F consistently. Peak season is the second week of October through late November. December is still good, just colder.

What's the difference between fall and spring fly fishing here?

Spring (April-May) is bigger numbers, smaller fish, peak hatches of caddis and mayflies. Fall (October-November) is fewer fish on average but bigger ones — brown trout move into shallow water and trophy hunting becomes realistic. Most experienced anglers prefer fall for trophy potential.

How early should I book a fall fly fishing trip?

October weekends typically fill by early September. November weekdays fill 2-3 weeks out. If you're targeting a specific October date, book by mid-August. Group trips (4+ anglers) need 6-8 weeks of lead time.

What gear do I need for fall fly fishing in North Georgia?

Layered clothing is the main thing. Mornings can be 40-50°F at the river even when daytime temps hit 70°F. We provide all fishing gear (rod, reel, flies, waders, boots) — you bring polarized sunglasses, a warm layer, and water-resistant outer shell.

Can I catch a trophy brown trout in the fall?

Realistically, yes — that's what fall season is built around. We routinely net 18-22 inch wild browns on the Soque in October-November. 24-inch+ fish are caught every season. The biggest fish of our year typically come out of October-early November trips.
