Ellijay is a short, scenic drive from three of Bowman's waters. The Toccoa float section is 30 to 40 minutes up Highway 5, and the Etowah private water is about 45 minutes the other way.
Pick one
Ellijay locals lean toward the wade trips on the smaller water. The Etowah and Noontootla get the most interest from people who live here.
Apple season
October brings crowds to Ellijay for the apple festival and the orchards. It's also one of the best months to be on the water. A morning float on the Toccoa and an afternoon at the orchards makes a full day, and a group of four fits in two boats.
The private water on the Etowah reopens on September 20 after its summer rest, so fall is also prime time to wade.
What to bring
Bring waders if you own them, or borrow Bowman's. Rods, reels and flies are supplied too. You need a Georgia fishing license and trout stamp, polarized sunglasses and something warm for an early start.
