Big Numbers on One of the Southeast's Best Trout Rivers

The Tuckasegee River — the "Tuck" to anyone who's fished it — is the largest trout river in Western North Carolina, and it has a well-earned reputation as one of the most productive trout fisheries in the entire area. During North Carolina's Delayed Harvest season, October through early June, the river is loaded with Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout stocked at high densities and protected by catch-and-release regulations — the result is an extraordinary fishery where big fish days are the norm, not the exception.

With Bowman Fly Fishing, you'll have the option to float two of the best sections of the Tuck — one near Webster and Dillsboro, NC and one through Bryson City — fishing from a drift boat with a guide who knows exactly where the fish hold. The float gives you access to water wading anglers can't reach, and your guide will keep you on fish from the first cast to the last. Don't let the high fish counts fool you — the Tuckasegee also produces some genuinely large trout, and a trophy is always within reach.

It's a perfect fit for all skill levels, whether you've never held a fly rod or you've been chasing trout your whole life. If you want to put a lot of fish in the net — with a real shot at something big — in one of the most beautiful river valleys in the South, the Tuck is your trip.

When do you fish the Tuckasegee?

We fish the Tuckasegee exclusively during North Carolina's Delayed Harvest season, which runs from October 1 through The First Saturday in June. During this period the river is stocked heavily with Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout under catch-and-release regulations — it's simply the best time of year to be on this river, with the most fish, the best conditions, and the highest chance of landing something truly special.

Why is this a full day trip only?

The Tuckasegee is located on the outer edge of the areas we typically travel to and guide, and where most of our customers stay. A full day on the water makes the most of the trip and the drive to this area and gives you the best chance to experience everything the river has to offer. Trust us, once you're on the water you'll be glad you have the full day, it's always worth spending the full day on this river.

How many anglers can fish per boat?

Tuckasegee float trips are priced per boat for 1–2 anglers. We can easily accommodate larger groups of up to 10 anglers with multiple boats and guides there to assist with the day.

What kind of fish counts can I expect?

The Tuckasegee is one of the highest-producing trout rivers we guide on which is why we often make the drive up to this river. Beginners routinely put 20 fish days together, and experienced anglers can push much higher. It's genuinely one of the best rivers in the Southeast for sheer numbers of fish to the net.

Do I need fly fishing experience?

Not at all. The Tuckasegee is a very beginner-friendly float trip — the fish are often plentiful and your guide will teach you everything you need. If you've been fly fishing for years, the river will still challenge and reward you. It's a great fit for mixed groups of different experience levels.

What do I need to bring?

Sunglasses, sunscreen, and layers depending on the season. We provide all rods, reels, flies, and terminal gear but if you chose to bring your own, a 9ft 5wt or 6wt with floating lines are ideal for fishing the tuck. A North Carolina fishing license is required for the Tuckasegee — purchase online at ncwildlife.org before your trip.
