Fly Fishing Subscription Boxes, Compared (2026): Which Ones Still Ship

The short version

Of the fly boxes we checked on November 4, 2026, three could be ordered: Postfly ($34.95 a month for 8 to 12 trout flies), Yakoda Supply Fly Club ($72 a quarter for 20 flies) and Smitty's Fly Box ($25 for 12 flies plus extras). Fly of the Month Club's site was up, but its secure checkout wouldn't load, and The Fly Crate's trout box was sold out. For a Christmas gift, pick Smitty's if you want flies chosen for where they fish, a Postfly prepaid plan if you want a set number of months, or Yakoda if you can order before its December 1 ship date and want patterns it says you can't buy anywhere else (its page doesn't say they're trout flies).

Most articles about fly fishing subscription boxes were written between 2018 and 2024, and many of the boxes they recommend have since closed. On November 4, 2026, we went to the website of each fly-only box named on the top-ranking lists we read, to see which ones still take orders and what they cost. Every price and quote below comes from that check.

This guide is for someone buying for a trout angler, so we explain each box in plain terms. If you'd rather give them a day on the water, our gift certificates come in any amount, and we cover them at the end.

Which fly fishing subscription boxes can you still order?

Of the boxes we checked: Postfly, Yakoda Supply and Smitty's Fly Box. The Fly Crate was sold out, and Fly of the Month Club's checkout page wouldn't load in our test.

On November 4, 2026, only three fly fishing subscription boxes we found were open for orders: Postfly, Yakoda Supply and Smitty's Fly Box.

Which "best box" lists are out of date?

Nearly all of the ones that rank on Google. One review site, My Outdoor Basecamp, puts it plainly: "many of the subscription box organizations are no longer in business, or have been absorbed by other subscription boxes." (My Outdoor Basecamp)

Four of the top-ranking lists still recommend boxes we couldn't find in business:

When we looked up those boxes, plus two more that turned up in our searches, none could be ordered:

If a list you're reading recommends one of these, check its date before you trust its prices.

Postfly: the most flexible monthly box

Postfly's Monthly Trout Fly Box is $34.95 a month for "8-12 Premium Trout Flies." You can double the flies for $54.90 a month or triple them for $72.85. (Postfly trout box) On its plans page, Postfly describes "guide-tested flies for your target species," plus tips and a "bonus leader & decal." A leader is the clear line that connects the fly line to the fly. (Postfly plans)

Postfly's monthly plans page still lists older prices ($29.95 and $49.95) that don't match the product page, so trust the price at checkout. Postfly only ships inside the US.

Yakoda Supply Fly Club: hard-to-find patterns, if you order before December 1

Yakoda's draw is its flies: 20 a quarter, including what Yakoda calls "patterns that can't be purchased anywhere else," with free shipping, 20% off the site and a free year of the TroutRoutes Pro trout-map app. The Fly Club ships four times a year, and one of those dates is December 1. Order before then and the December tin ships December 1, while supplies last. After that, the next quarterly tin is March 1, so pick Postfly or Smitty's instead. (Yakoda Supply)

Yakoda's own words on timing: "Flies ship four times a year on June 1st, September 1st, December 1st, and March 1st via USPS. You can subscribe any day up to the ship date to receive that quarter's tin while supplies last."

  1. The quarterly plan is $72 every three months, or $259 a year with a 10% discount.
  2. Each shipment holds 20 flies, including what Yakoda calls "patterns that can't be purchased anywhere else." The first one comes in a Yakoda Slim Tin.
  3. Shipping is free on quarterly orders.
  4. Members get 20% off Yakoda's site all year.
  5. You're charged when you subscribe, then on the first day of each shipment month.
  6. Yakoda says you can cancel at any time, even after the first order arrives if you're not happy with it.
  7. Yakoda also sells smaller monthly packs: a 3-pack for $18 a month and a 6-pack for $30 a month. We didn't find a ship date for them.

Yakoda's page doesn't say the flies are trout flies, and it doesn't mention a gift option. Ship it to the recipient's address.

Smitty's Fly Box: flies picked for where they fish

Smitty's Fly Box is $25. Each one has "12 premium flies meticulously chosen for your area, time of year, and the fish you most frequently target." You enter the angler's location and target fish at checkout. The page shows both a "Subscribe" option and an "Add to cart" button. Smitty's FAQ says a one-time box ships within 1 to 3 business days of purchase. (Smitty's Fly Box)

The extras Smitty's lists, and what they do:

Smitty's also lists a Christmas Gift Subscription Box for $25, which promises "a free tray of flies to open on Christmas!" The page didn't show an order button in one of our checks, so confirm it's for sale before you plan on it. Its page says "Available until December 17th" but gives no year. According to Smitty's FAQ, a monthly subscription ships between the 3rd and 6th of each month with free US shipping, and the order deadline is midnight on the last day of the month. So a subscription started by November 30 ships December 3 to 6. You can pause or cancel any time from your account, with no fee. One-time orders ship in 1 to 3 business days, with free shipping on orders over $50 in the US (shipping policy).

Fly of the Month Club: checkout wasn't working

On November 4, 2026, Fly of the Month Club's secure checkout page wouldn't load, so we couldn't confirm an order would go through. The club has been running since 1996, according to its FAQ. A Freshwater membership is "$20.00 per month including shipping and handling," with "4-10 Trout Flies" a month and "a two page Bulletin." A saltwater version for bonefish, permit and tarpon costs the same. (Fly of the Month Club)

If you want this one, call or email the club first.

The Fly Crate: sold out for now

The Fly Crate's Quarterly Fly Club ships "36 trout flies" every three months, plus a magazine and stickers, for $89.99, or $79.99 with subscribe and save. On November 4, the page showed "Sold out" and the order button didn't work. Its older monthly plans are gone. (The Fly Crate) Outdoor Life named The Fly Crate its budget pick in a 2022 roundup, which shows how fast these lists go stale. (Outdoor Life)

What does each box cost per fly?

Among the boxes you could order, Smitty's has the lowest listed price per fly, about $2.08. Fly of the Month Club can drop to $2.00 in a 10-fly month, with shipping included, but its checkout wasn't working. The math, sorted by lowest cost per fly:

BoxPriceFliesCost per flyShipping
Fly of the Month Club (checkout failed)$204 to 10$2.00 to $5.00Included
Smitty's Fly Box$2512, plus extrasAbout $2.08Free on monthly subscriptions; one-time orders free over $50
The Fly Crate, subscribe and save (sold out)$79.9936About $2.22Not checked
Postfly, 12-month prepaid$377 for 12 boxes ($31.42 a box)8 to 12About $2.62 to $3.93Free on multi-month plans

Yakoda, annual$259 for 4 tins20 a tin (80 a year)About $3.24Free
Yakoda, quarterly$7220$3.60Free

Postfly's double and triple tiers ($54.90 and $72.85) aren't in the table because Postfly doesn't state exactly how many flies they hold.

Smitty's also lists extras like tippet, floatant and a leader, which an angler would buy anyway. A box built for the water your angler fishes is worth more than a cheaper box full of flies they'll never use.

What should you look for in a fly subscription box?

Trout flies, flies picked for where they fish, a clear price, known renewal and cancel terms, and shipping that works. The full checklist:

  1. Trout flies. Postfly, Smitty's and Fly of the Month Club all sell other species, and a box of saltwater flies is no use on a Georgia creek. Pick the trout or freshwater version.
  2. The right water. A box that asks where the angler fishes, like Smitty's, sends flies that suit that water.
  3. Useful extras. Tippet, floatant and a leader get used up, so they're worth having.
  4. The current price. Use the price on the product page at checkout, not an old plans page or a review site.
  5. Renewal. Know whether the plan renews on your card. If a page doesn't say, ask.
  6. Shipping. Check whether it's free and whether the box ships to the recipient's state.
  7. Cancel terms. Find them before you pay. Postfly, Yakoda, Smitty's and Fly of the Month Club all post theirs.

Will the flies suit North Georgia trout water?

They can, if the box knows where your angler fishes. Smitty's asks for a location and target fish at checkout. Postfly sells a trout-specific box. Yakoda's page doesn't say how its flies are chosen.

We're Bowman Fly Fishing, a guide service based in Dahlonega, and trout here eat different bugs at different times of year. If your angler wants to see what trout eat in North Georgia through the year, our North Georgia hatch chart lays it out month by month, and our beginner fly selection guide covers the basic patterns.

The best fly subscription box for a Georgia trout angler is one that asks where they fish.

How do you give a fly subscription box as a gift?

Ship it to the recipient's address and decide up front how many months you want to pay for.

Subscription box or a guided trip?

A box keeps flies coming in the mail. A guided trip gives your angler a day to use them, with a guide beside them. The two also work together: one box and a certificate toward a trip make a good pair.

Can several people chip in?Not something we checkedYes, certificates can be combined

You request a certificate, and we send a secure payment link within 24 hours. Once that's paid, the recipient gets a digital certificate by email with a code. They call or email us to book a date, and if their trip costs more than the certificate, they cover the rest then. A certificate works on any trip we run except the Dragonfly, our property on the upper Soque.

For a sense of cost, a half day on the Soque or Etowah is $400 for one angler. A half-day float is $425 per boat for one or two anglers, the easiest way to give a trip to a couple. Our most popular gift is a full day on the Soque or Etowah: $550 for one angler, riverside lunch included. A full-day float is $575 per boat. See every trip on our trip rates page, read how our gift certificates work, or call (706) 963-0435.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yakoda Supply ($72 a quarter) is the pick for hard-to-find patterns if you order before its December 1 ship date, though its page doesn't say the flies are trout flies.

Is The Fly Crate still in business?

Its website is live, but its Quarterly Fly Club trout box ($89.99, or $79.99 with subscribe and save) was marked sold out on November 4, 2026, and couldn't be ordered.

Which fly subscription box ships in time for Christmas?

Postfly's 4 Month Gift Plan is $133 up front for four boxes, and the first box ships within about 2 business days. A monthly Postfly plan bills again on the 1st of each month, and you can only cancel after the first box ships, so ask whether the gift plan renews. Yakoda's December tin ships December 1 if you subscribe before then. A Smitty's subscription started by November 30 ships December 3 to 6, and a one-time Smitty's box ships in 1 to 3 business days.

Between $18 and $72.85 a shipment for the boxes you could order on November 4, 2026. Yakoda's 3-pack is $18 a month, Smitty's is $25 a box, Postfly is $34.95 a month ($72.85 for triple flies) and Yakoda's quarterly tin is $72. Fly of the Month Club ($20) had a checkout page that wouldn't load in our test, and The Fly Crate ($89.99 a quarter) was sold out.

Can I cancel a fly subscription box?

Postfly lets you cancel any time after the first box ships. Yakoda, Smitty's and Fly of the Month Club let you cancel at any time, and Fly of the Month Club refunds a prepaid balance. Smitty's charges no fee to pause or cancel.

Are there fly tying subscription boxes?

Yes. Postfly sells fly tying kit plans at the same prices as its fly boxes. Smitty's sells beginner and intermediate tying boxes for $25 each.

How fast does a Bowman gift certificate arrive?

We email you a secure payment link within 24 hours of your request. Once it's paid, your recipient gets a personalized digital certificate by email, so there's no shipping date to miss.

A box of flies, or a day to use them?

Our gift certificates come in any amount, never expire and arrive by email, so there's no shipping date to miss.
