Fly Fishing 101
The Best Fly Fishing Books (2026): 22 Picks, From First Cast to Georgia Guidebooks
The short version
For a beginner, the best fly fishing book is The Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide by Tom Rosenbauer ($29.95). For a trout angler who wants to catch more fish, it's Joe Humphreys's Trout Tactics ($36.95). For someone who just likes a good story, start with A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean ($18.00). For anyone who fishes North Georgia, Trout Streams of Southern Appalachia by Jimmy Jacobs ($29.99) is a five-state guide to public trout water that was in print and in stock on November 4. Its newest edition is from 2009. Prices are Barnes & Noble list prices on November 4, 2026.
Most "best fly fishing books" lists are a stack of the same classic stories. Those are good books, and we include them. But a gift should fit the person. Someone learning to cast needs a different book than someone who has fished for twenty years and wants something to read by the fire.
So this list is sorted by who it's for. We also cover two kinds of books the big lists skip: guidebooks for Georgia and the Southern Appalachians, and books for kids. If you'd rather give a day on the water, our gift certificates come in any amount, and we explain them at the end.
Which fly fishing book should you buy?
The Orvis guide for a beginner, Trout Tactics for an angler who wants more trout, and A River Runs Through It for someone who just likes to read. The quick picks, with prices from November 4, 2026 (all 22 books are below):

| A trip planner who likes big photo books | Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die, Chris Santella | $29.99 |
Pick a fly fishing book for the person: a beginner needs a how-to book, an angler past year one needs tactics, and a reader wants a story.
What is the best fly fishing book for beginners?
The Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide by Tom Rosenbauer. It's the one book that covers gear, knots, casting, flies and how trout behave, in plain language. Cast & Spear's list of the best fly fishing books labels it best for beginners. The revised edition is $29.95 in paperback. (Barnes & Noble)
Two more books for the early years:
- The Little Red Book of Fly Fishing, Kirk Deeter and Charlie Meyers, $19.99. Short tips on reading water and picking flies, in a pocket-size hardcover. It's a good stocking stuffer for any level. (Barnes & Noble)
- Fly-Casting Fundamentals, Lefty Kreh, $24.95. This is the book for someone who can fish but whose cast falls apart in the wind. (Barnes & Noble)
One more starter book is worth knowing: Curtis Creek Manifesto by Sheridan Anderson, a 48-page illustrated guide from 1978 (Wikipedia). Barnes & Noble and the publisher, Frank Amato, didn't list a new copy on November 4, so look for it used or ask a fly shop.
A book teaches the basics. Time on the water with a guide is a separate gift, and a good one to pair with it. We wrote a guide to what to expect on a first guided fly fishing trip if they've never been.
Which books help a trout angler catch more fish?
Joe Humphreys's Trout Tactics, first published in 1981 (Open Library). Troutbitten, a well-read trout fishing site, calls it "Simply the best book on trout fishing." It's about how trout feed and how to get a fly to them. The hardcover is $36.95. (Barnes & Noble, Troutbitten)
The Bug Book, Paul Weamer, $19.95. A guide to the insects that live in trout streams: mayflies, caddis, stoneflies and midges. Knowing which bug is hatching tells you which fly to tie on, which anglers call "matching the hatch." It's a good gift for the angler who keeps asking what the fish are eating. Outdoor Life put it on its list of the best fly fishing books. (Barnes & Noble)
If they want to learn the bug side here at home, our guide to matching the hatch for trout and our North Georgia hatch chart go with this book well.
What is a good first fly tying book?
Fly Tying Made Clear and Simple by Skip Morris, first published in 1992 (Open Library). It's the right pick for someone who just got a vise or is about to. The paperback is $22.95. (Barnes & Noble)
For an experienced tier who chases big fish with streamers (large flies that look like baitfish), Outdoor Life named Game Changer by Blane Chocklett one of its best fly fishing books. It's a $49.95 hardcover from 2020, but Barnes & Noble showed it out of stock on November 4. (Barnes & Noble)
What are the classic fly fishing books everyone should read?
Start with A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean, $18.00 in paperback. These are the stories, not the manuals, and they're the safest gift for someone you don't know well, because you don't need to know how they fish.
- A River Runs Through It and Other Stories, Norman Maclean (1976), $18.00 paperback. A classic about two brothers and their father in Montana; Cast & Spear and Flylords both put it on their lists. There's also a gift hardcover with wood engravings by Barry Moser for $35.00. (paperback, gift edition)
- The Longest Silence, Thomas McGuane (1999), $18.00. Essays from a life spent fishing everything from trout to tarpon. It's on several of the big "best fly fishing books" lists. (Barnes & Noble)
- The River Why, David James Duncan (1983), $19.99. A funny, odd novel about a young fishing fanatic. Good for the angler who'd rather read fiction. (Barnes & Noble)
- Trout Bum, John Gierach (1986). Small-stream trout fishing with a lot of humor. On November 4, both the $19.99 paperback and the $34.99 hardcover showed out of stock at Barnes & Noble. (Barnes & Noble)
- The Feather Thief, Kirk Wallace Johnson (2018), $18.00. A true crime story set in the world of fly tying. It's a great pick for a reader who doesn't fish at all. (Barnes & Noble)
- The Optimist, David Coggins (2021), $18.99 paperback. A newer book on why people love fly fishing, good for an angler in their first few years. (Barnes & Noble)
Sports Illustrated's list of the best fly fishing books leans on these same classics, and Hatch Magazine has a good list of books for fly anglers if you want more.
Is there a good book about fly fishing in Georgia?
Yes. Trout Streams of Southern Appalachia by Jimmy Jacobs is the Georgia guidebook that was in print and in stock on November 4. Jacobs covers public trout water across five states, from Georgia and the Carolinas up through Tennessee and Kentucky. The newest edition, the third, dates to 2009, so access details should be checked before fishing from it. The paperback is $29.99 and was in stock on November 4. (Barnes & Noble)
The regional books side by side:
| Book | Covers | Status on November 4, 2026 | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trout Streams of Southern Appalachia, Jimmy Jacobs | Public trout water in five states, Georgia included | In print, in stock | $29.99 |
| Trout Fishing in North Georgia, Jimmy Jacobs | Public streams and rivers in North Georgia | Out of print, used only | Used copies listed on AbeBooks |
| Flyfisher's Guide to North Carolina & Georgia, Nick Carter (2017) | The Smokies and Pisgah down to the Chattahoochee (publisher text) | Listed, out of stock | $29.95 |
| Fly Fishing Guide to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Ian and Charity Rutter (2024) | The Smokies | In print, in stock | $34.95 |
| The Ultimate Fly-Fishing Guide to the Great Smoky Mountains, Don Kirk and Greg Ward (2011) | The Smokies, watershed by watershed | In print | $19.95 paperback |
Jacobs' North Georgia book is a fun find for a Georgia angler who likes old guidebooks. Its publisher, Peachtree, lists it as out of print, and used copies were listed on AbeBooks on November 4. (Peachtree, AbeBooks) For Carter's book, see Barnes & Noble. For the Smokies: the Rutters' guide and Kirk and Ward.
Guidebooks cover public water. The vast majority of the Soque, where we guide, lies on private land, making access difficult for most fishermen. That's where we come in. Our own guide to North Georgia's rivers covers both kinds of water.
What fly fishing books are good for kids?
A Good Day's Fishing by James Prosek ($19.99) for little kids, and The Orvis Kids' Guide to Beginning Fly Fishing by Tyler Befus ($14.99, out of stock on November 4) for an older kid ready to learn.
A Good Day's Fishing, James Prosek (2004), $19.99. A picture book with Prosek's watercolors, for a young child. (Barnes & Noble)
The Orvis Kids' Guide to Beginning Fly Fishing, Tyler Befus (2016), $14.99. A how-to book for an older kid who's ready to cast. It showed out of stock at Barnes & Noble on November 4, so check another bookstore. (Barnes & Noble)
If you're thinking about taking a kid on the water, our tips on teaching a kid to fly fish are a good next read.
What's a good coffee-table fly fishing book?
Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die by Chris Santella, first published in 2004. It's a hardcover tour of famous fishing spots around the world, with big photos. It suits the angler who likes to plan trips and the person who likes to dream about them. It's $29.99. (Barnes & Noble)
Which popular fly fishing books are hard to find right now?
Several well-known books showed out of stock at Barnes & Noble on November 4, 2026. If one of these is on your list, order early or try another store:
- Trout Bum, John Gierach (both formats)
- Game Changer, Blane Chocklett
- The Orvis Kids' Guide to Beginning Fly Fishing, Tyler Befus
- Flyfisher's Guide to North Carolina & Georgia, Nick Carter
It's worth checking a second store before you give up.
Which fly fishing books cost less than $20?
A River Runs Through It, The Longest Silence and The Feather Thief, all $18.00. If you're filling a stocking or buying for a coworker, these were all under $20 at Barnes & Noble on November 4, 2026:
- A River Runs Through It, Norman Maclean: $18.00
- The Longest Silence, Thomas McGuane: $18.00
- The Feather Thief, Kirk Wallace Johnson: $18.00
- The Optimist, David Coggins: $18.99
- The River Why, David James Duncan: $19.99
- The Little Red Book of Fly Fishing, Kirk Deeter and Charlie Meyers: $19.99
- The Bug Book, Paul Weamer: $19.95
- A Good Day's Fishing, James Prosek: $19.99
- The Ultimate Fly-Fishing Guide to the Great Smoky Mountains, Don Kirk and Greg Ward: $19.95 paperback
Between $20 and $30 you get most of the how-to books, like the Orvis guide, Kreh's casting book and the Skip Morris tying book. Over $30: Trout Tactics at $36.95, the illustrated A River Runs Through It at $35.00 and the Rutters' Smokies guide at $34.95. Two books make a nice gift at almost any budget. A how-to book with a classic story covers both the learning and the reading.
How do you pick the right fly fishing book as a gift?
Ask yourself three questions, in this order:
- Do they want to learn or to read? A learner wants a how-to book. A reader wants a story. If you're not sure, a story is the safer gift.
- Where do they fish? A Georgia angler will use a Southern Appalachian guidebook. Someone who travels west might like Fifty Places more.
- Is it for keeps? A hardcover or gift edition, like the $35.00 illustrated A River Runs Through It, feels more like a present than a paperback.
Can you pair a book with a guided trip?
Yes, and the two go well together: a book about trout fishing, and a day to try what it teaches. Our gift certificates come in set amounts that match our trips or any custom amount you choose. They don't expire, and a few people can each buy one and stack them toward the same trip.
The steps, start to finish:
- Fill out the request on our gift certificates page. Within a day, we send you a link to pay securely.
- Once it's paid, the certificate goes by email to the person you're giving it to, with a redemption code.
- When they're ready, they call or email us and pick a trip and a date. We bring the rods, reels, waders, boots and flies.
- The certificate is good on every trip we run except the Dragonfly, our headwaters property on the Soque.
On our Soque and Etowah water, a half day is $400 for one angler or $550 for two, and a full day with lunch by the river is $550 for one or $725 for two. A float is $425 for a half day or $575 for a full day, per boat for one or two anglers. If the trip costs more than the certificate, they pay the difference when they book. Floats, group pricing and the rest are on our trip rates page. If you're still shopping, we've also put together 23 fly fishing gifts under $100 and a Christmas gift guide built around trips.
