Why an experience makes a better gift than another thing

Most gifts for the angler in your life are objects: a knife, a flask, a fly box, a hat. They are useful, and most of them end up in a drawer. A day on a river is different. It gets planned, looked forward to, fished, photographed and talked about for years.

An experience also works for people a thing can't reach. For someone who has never fished, it is a first time, taught by a professional, with nothing to buy first. For someone who fishes every weekend, it is a day on private water they can't walk onto by themselves. And for a parent and a grown child, or two old friends, it is a day together that doesn't happen on its own.

Bowman includes all the gear, from rods and reels to waders and boots, and lists photos as included on its trips. The person you give it to only has to show up.

How much should you spend? Gifts by budget

$400: a half-day trip for one

The starting point, and enough for a real day. A half day is 4 hours on private water with a guide, wading the Etowah or the Soque. It suits a first-timer who has been curious about fly fishing, or an angler who wants to try a new river. Bowman calls it "perfect for a first experience."

$425: a half-day float

A day in a drift boat on the Toccoa, below Blue Ridge Dam; the price covers the boat, and one or two people can fish from it. The guide rows and the angler fishes from the boat, so there is no wading. It is a good choice for someone who would rather not stand in a river, or for a couple sharing one boat.

$550: a full-day trip for one

Bowman's most popular gift. A full day is 8 hours on private water with a riverside lunch, the "complete experience" in Bowman's words. It fits an angler who already loves fishing and wants the whole day, or a milestone: a big birthday, an anniversary, a retirement.

$575: a full-day float

The full-day version of the Toccoa drift boat trip, again per boat for one or two anglers, with lunch included.

Any custom amount

You can request any value. Custom amounts suit a group, a multi-day plan, or a few people chipping in toward one trip. The certificate is redeemable toward any trip Bowman offers except the Dragonfly.

Bigger gifts: a hosted trip

For the serious angler, Bowman runs small-group hosted trips with its own guides. Bowman's current hosted trips are Louisiana redfish in December 2026, at about $2,500 per person, and Patagonia in January 2027, at about $4,800 per person. Lodging, meals, gear and guides are covered; flights are separate, and Bowman helps book them. Bowman says certificates can be applied toward hosted travel. What a gift certificate covers, and what it doesn't

The certificate covers the trip itself: the guide, the private water access and all the gear. On a full day, it covers the riverside lunch too.

Three things sit outside it:

• The fishing license. Anyone 16 or older needs a Georgia fishing license plus the trout license, bought online at Go Outdoors Georgia. The state's trout regulations are worth a look for anyone who wants to fish on their own later. A Georgia resident pays $25 for both for the year; a visitor can buy both for one day for $20.
• The tip. Tipping the guide is customary and separate, usually 15 to 20% of the trip cost. If you want the gift to be complete, tuck tip cash into the card.
• Getting there. Most of Bowman's water is 75 to 90 minutes from Atlanta.

How Bowman's gift certificates work

The process has three steps:

1. Choose the amount. Pick a suggested amount or ask for a custom one.
2. Pay, then it's sent. Bowman emails you a secure payment link within 24 hours. Once it's paid, the recipient gets a personalized digital certificate by email, with a unique redemption code.
3. They book. The recipient calls or emails Bowman, gives the code, and picks the trip and dates. Bowman handles the rest.

Which gift fits which person?

Someone who has never fished. The $400 half day. It is the right length for a first try, and Bowman tells beginners it can have them casting in about 20 minutes. The first guided trip guide is worth forwarding with the gift.

An angler who fishes public water. The $550 full day on private water. The difference between a crowded public stretch and a private beat with a guide is the gift.

Someone who would rather not wade. The $425 or $575 float on the Toccoa, fished from a drift boat.

A couple, or a parent and grown child. A trip for two. A half day for two on the Etowah or Soque is $550 and a full day is $725, so a custom certificate in either amount covers both of them. A float covers two in one boat at the per-boat price.

Which trip should the gift be for?

The recipient chooses the trip, but picking the amount is easier when you know the options. Here is each one in a sentence or two.

The Etowah: Bowman's leased beats outside Dahlonega, one of them at a winery, roughly 75 minutes up GA-400 from Buckhead. It is the nearest guided trout trip to the city, and a gentle wade, which makes it an easy yes for a busy person or a beginner.

The Soque: the big-fish river, in Habersham County. Bowman's beats there hold trout that typically run 18 inches or more, with the largest around 28, yet beginners fish it too. Bowman pauses it each summer, June 10 to September 20, while the river is too warm.

The Toccoa float: a seat in a drift boat below Blue Ridge Dam, with the guide at the oars. No wading at all, and because the dam feeds the river cold water, it is the trout gift that works in July.

Stripers on the Chattahoochee. A float trip after striped bass, with fly or conventional tackle, priced like the Toccoa float at $425 to $575 per boat. The season runs from late March into early September. It suits someone who wants a hard-fighting fish rather than trout.

The Dragonfly. The premium headwater beat on the upper Soque. Bowman's certificates can't be used on it, so if that is the trip you have in mind, book it as a regular trip instead.

What the recipient's day will look like

Knowing what happens helps you describe the gift when you hand it over. The guide sends directions and a meeting time the day before, and most trips meet at the river around 8 a.m. Anyone who needs gear is fitted with waders and boots, and the guide brings the rods, reels, flies, leaders and tippet.

Then the guide teaches as much as the person needs. A beginner learns the cast and how to let the fly drift naturally; an experienced angler gets put on the right water with the right fly. A half day is 4 hours of fishing, a full day is 8 with lunch by the river, and Bowman lists photos as included. Every fish on Bowman's leased water goes back in the river, so the photo is the trophy.

Bowman fishes rain or shine and only cancels or reschedules for dangerous conditions like lightning, flooding or extreme cold, so a gray forecast doesn't spoil the day.

When should the recipient book?

Because the certificate never expires, the recipient can pick the season that suits the trip:

• Spring, March to May: a peak season on the Soque and a lively time on most trout water, with hatches bringing fish up.
• Summer: the Toccoa float, since the dam keeps that river cold. The Soque is closed to Bowman trips from June 10 to September 20.
• Fall, October and November: the other Soque peak, with brown trout aggressive before they spawn.
• Winter, December to February: quieter, slower fishing, and Bowman notes the Soque can bring some of the largest fish of the year.

Weekends fill first, so a recipient who wants a Saturday should call early. Bowman confirms the date and time and applies the certificate to the trip.

When should you order?

Order a few days before you need it. The payment link comes within 24 hours, and the certificate is emailed as soon as it's paid. Before a holiday or a birthday, leave yourself a few days' cushion. If you want to hand over something on the day, print the emailed certificate and put it in a card with the tip cash.

Because the certificates never expire, an early order costs nothing. The recipient can book in spring or fall, the best seasons on most of Bowman's water, whenever the gift was given.

How to make the gift feel like more than a code

A few touches turn an email into a gift someone remembers:

• Print it and put it in a card, with a note about why you thought of them.
• Add the tip. It means the day is fully covered.
• Add a small, useful extra, like a pair of polarized sunglasses for the trip.
• Offer to go with them. A certificate for two, with you as the second angler, is a gift and a plan in one.
• Suggest a season. Spring and fall are the peak seasons on the Soque, for example, and the Toccoa fishes through summer.

What to write in the card

The note is what makes a certificate feel personal. Keep it short and specific:

• For a beginner: "You've talked about trying this for years. Pick a Saturday and the rest is handled."
• For a parent: "One day on the river, just us. You choose the date."
• For an angler friend: "Private water, a guide and no crowds. Go catch the big one."
• For a retiree: "Now you have the time. Here's the first day of it."

If you're joining them on the river, write down a date you'd like to go, so the plan doesn't stall in a drawer.

Is a fly fishing gift right for someone who lives far away?

It works best for someone who lives in or visits North Georgia, since the trip happens on Bowman's rivers. For a person who comes to Atlanta for work or family, the certificate gives them a reason to add a day. For someone who never visits, a hosted trip contribution or a different gift may make more sense. Because the certificates never expire, a person planning a future visit can hold it until then.
